REGARDING THE STATEN ISLAND
SUBSTANCE ABUSE EPIDEMIC
At the March 27th, 2014 meeting of the
Staten Island Vicariate, the subject of
substance abuse on Staten Island was the
principle topic. Congressman Michael
Grimm, Adrienne Abbate (Project Director,
Tackling Youth Substance Abuse) and
Luke Nosta (Director, Camelot) made
presentations on the serious abuse problem
on Staten Island. Click here for details.
On Sunday, June 7th at 1:00pm your Faith Formation Committee
will be hosting the annual Parish Picnic/Barbeque on the lawn of
Presentation Hall. Not only will there be food and drink, there will
be games for the kids and those ‘young in heart”. In case of rain,
the festivities will be held in the Olympia Activity Center.
All are welcomed and encouraged to attend. It's events like this that unite our Church.
Show your support, come on by.
Admission is free.
MAKING ALL THINGS NEW
Father Joe addressed an audience of approximately 60 parishioners on Monday evening
(may 18th) at our Town Hall Meeting regarding Making All Things New.
Many topics and concerns were discussed, including:
- Parish identity.
- The need for an Implementation Team.
- The Appeal made by the Trustees and Finance
Committee with the backing of the Parish Council.
- Mass schedules.
- Religious Education.
- Communications; web sites and Bulletins.
- Parish organizations and groups.
Questions from the audience covered:
- Olympia Activity Center.
- Convent Sale/Rental.
- St. Christopher’s parishioner reaction.
- Father Joe’s status as Pastor/Administrator.
Details will be published shortly.
FROM THE MAY 17, 2015 CHURCH BULLETIN
As you heard last week, Cardinal Dolan has made his decision regarding Making All Things New.
St. Margaret Mary Church will remain open. However, the Cardinal has decided to merge the
two parishes of St. Margaret Mary and St. Christopher, effective August 1, 2015.
St. Christopher Church will be the main parish church and the Churches will now be considered
one parish, to share priests, with one pastor. There will be one parish staff, one parish council,
one set of sacramental records, one financial account, one group of Trustees, and a developing
process of working more closely together in common apostolates, activities and organizations.
Daily and weekend Masses will continue to be said at St. Margaret Mary. All the sacraments
and funeral Masses will continue to be celebrated at St. Margaret Mary’s as well. When you
think about it, in reality, we have been doing a good portion of this already under the inspired
leadership of Father Joe.
Many of the details are yet to be worked out. Father Joe will be meeting with the Trustees,
parish councils and staff to insure both Churches concerns are addressed. We, the parishioners
of St. Margaret Mary thank Father Joe for all that he has done and have complete confidence in
his decision making. We will do everything possible to support Father Joe and make this a
smooth transition. We ask for your patience and prays as we proceed in this process.

2015 Cardinal's Stewardship Appeal
Our Goal has been reached - with some help!
We thank our parishioners for your support of the 2015 Cardinal’s Stewardship Appeal.
As of May 22, 2015 our parish has received 40 pledges, totaling $12, 145.00.
This includes $5,000.00 from the Korean Catholic Apostolate of Staten Island.
With the Korean Catholic Apostolate donation, we have officially met our goal of $11,000.
Without their donation, we have received 39 pledges totaling $7145.00.
Last year 63 parishioners pledged $12,292, surpassing our $11,000 goal.
Please show your support for the Cardinal’s Stewardship Appeal by making your pledge today.
Your commitment will help us reach this year’s goal of $11,000.
Thank you very much for your continuing generosity and God bless you!
The 2014-2015 Religious Education Schedules for Levels 1-4 and 5-8 are available
on the Religious Education Page.
Our Religious Education program is currently taking Registrations and re-Registrations for the
2015-2016 semester. We accept children who have already been baptized from Grade 1 to
Grade 8. First Penance is made in level 2; First Communion in level 3 and Confirmation in
level 8. Our program is a continuing education program which builds on each previous year’s
curriculum; therefore, it is important that students remain in the program throughout.
For those who have reached the age of 7 and have not been baptized or have reached
Grade 4 and have no religious education we have a separate program for them.
Please see Mrs. Regan at the Rectory or call her at (718) 351-2119 for more information or a Form.
Please join us at a Scripture Study session. They are held on:
- Mondays at 7:00pm in the Dongan Hall Meeting Room, and
- Tuesday immediately after he 9:00am Mass in the Rectory
These sessions read the scriptures for the coming week and a reflection of each reading.
There is then a round table discussion as to how the readings impact the individual.
If you are shy or don’t wish to share your experiences, that’s fine. No one is required
to do anything other than listen to and reflect on the readings.
Over the years we have had many people attend these sessions and all walk away with a
better feeling of themselves and others. As one participant has mentioned “this is food
for our mind and soul.”
We are not Biblical Scholars, we are a group of individuals who obtain a great deal
out of the teachings from the Bible. The sessions are very informal and we even provide
coffee and treats.
