Welcome Father Joseph McLafferty (July 1st, 2014)
The parishioners of St. Margaret Mary’s are excited to wish our new Temporary Administrator,
Father Joseph McLafferty to our Midland Beach family.  Father Joe is no stranger to his new
parish.  As Pastor of St. Christopher’s, he has been to our events, has formed relationships with
a number of our parishioners and is already familiar with some of our strengths, issues and

This is an exciting and challenging time.  With Father Joe’s leadership, we are confident that
St. Margaret Mary’s will continue to be that very special and inviting Church it has been for
the last 93 years.

Welcome Father Joe!

Father Joe's Introduction
(From the July 13th, 2014 Bulletin)
Joseph McLafferty was born in the Inwood section of northern Manhattan.
Joseph was the third and youngest child of James and Kathleen McLafferty.
His older brothers are identical twins, James and John.  At the age of 5 his family
moved to Harriman, New York in Orange County.  Joseph attended St. Anastasia
where he received his First Communion and Confirmation.  Having no available
Catholic schools, Joe attended public school in Harriman.  While in high school,
he seriously thought of the priesthood.  After graduation, he headed off to Iona
College, a Catholic College in New Rochelle, Westchester County New York.
While attending Iona, he boarded at the St. John Neumann Residence in the Bronx,
which is housing for men considering life as a priest.  After graduating from Iona,
Joe entered the seminary of St. Joseph Dunwoodie.  He studied for a year in Rome
and two years at Dunwoodie.

In Joe’s final, 4th year he experienced fears of readiness and wasn’t sure of what he
wanted or where God wanted him to be.  As a result, he left the seminary, moved back
with his parents in Old Bridge, New Jersey and got a job in Manhattan with a non-profit
housing development corporation headed by an East Harlem priest.  Joe worked there and
at the parish of St. Francis de Sales on East 96th Street.  During part of this 3 ½ years,
he lived in the Bronx.  It was that work for the parish, the priest’s encouragement, and the
enlightenment of God’s grace that led him back to the seminary to finish his studies.

Joseph completed his studies in 2 years and was ordained a priest on May 20th, 2000 at
St. Patrick’s Cathedral.   It was a long trip to the priesthood from high school graduation in
1987 until 2000.  Father Joe has no regrets and due to God’s graces felt it was the path that
he needed to take.

Father Joe’s first assignment was to St. Patrick’s, Yorktown Heights in northern Westchester
County from 2000 to 2004.   His next assignment was to Our Lady Star of the Sea,
Staten Island from 2004 to 2008.  On September 1st, 2008 Father Joe became the
Pastor at St. Christopher’s and on July 1st, 2014 received the additional assignment as
Temporary Administrator of St. Margaret Mary.

Father Joe’s mother died when he was in high school.  While in college his father remarried
a wonderful woman.  They have been living in Red Hook, Dutchess County for the last
11 years.  His brother Jim is married to Claire.  They have two sons, Ryan, 22 and
Kieran, 15.  They live in New Jersey.   His brother John is married to Robin.
They have two daughters, Sarah, 16 and Julia, 14.  They live in Massachusetts.

We thank Father Joe for sharing his history with us and
we look forward to his spiritual leadership.

Religious Education here at St. Margaret Mary’s is more than just a Sacramental
preparation program.  We welcome the children as they enter the 1st Grade and guide
them through the 8th Grade.  The 1st Graders learn about God’s love for them.  In the
second year we prepare them for the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  In the 3rd year they
receive their 1st Eucharist.  They continue learning about God’s love and how they can
follow Jesus’ footsteps.  We keep building upon what they learn each year until they are
prepared to enter fully into the Church by receiving Confirmation in the 8th year of their
studies, at which time we send them out to make disciples of others.

None of this is possible without a dedicated staff of committed instructors.
For the 2013-2014 School Year we had 11 wonderful, dedicated people that guided and
instructed the 80 children through the Program.  Our sincerest thank you is extended to:
- Molly Funk, 1st Level                - Arlene Baratta, 5th Level
- Caroline Esposito, 2nd Level     - Lynne Kamertz & Maria Romagnuolo, 6th Level
- Noreen Meagher, 3rd Level      - Christine Marra, 7th Level
- Sister Amelia, 4th Level             - Cheryl Anne Lee & Cathy Baggs, 8th Level
A special thank you goes out to Barbara Regan who is our Religious Education
Coordinator.  Barbara spends endless hours to insure that our children are provided the
best Catholic education they can receive.

God bless our children and their parents and may their
religious education be enforced throughout the summer months.

Cardinal's Stewardship Appeal Campaign
Congratulations St. Margaret Mary's Parishioners!!!!

As of June 20th our parish exceeded its goal of $11,000!
What an outstanding accomplishment.

As of June 27th, we have received 63 pledges, totaling $12,292.

What makes this so significant is that last year we received 61 pledges,
totaling $11,637 surpassing our goal of $10,500.  Of that $11,637 a
very generous contribution was made by the Korean Catholic
Apostolate of Staten Island.  This year, you the parishioners of
St. Margaret Mary stepped forwarded and showed your generosity in
exceeding last year without any assistance.

Our St. Margaret Mary’s family has much to be proud of in supporting
this vital archdiocese campaign that helps so many, including us during
our Hurricane Sandy recovery.

Its not too late to make a pledge if you haven’t made one as yet.
Envelopes are in the rear of the Church.

Thank you very much for your continuing generosity and God bless you!
